COVID-19 update 2024

Application deadline: May 22, 2024

Use of grant funds: A three-month extension has been put in place to allow institutions to use their 2023-24 Research Support Fund (RSF) grant (including Incremental Project Grants [IPG] and research security, if applicable) for expenses incurred between April 1 and June 30, 2024, that were deferred or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

End-of-grant period reporting requirements: The reporting deadline for 2023-24 RSF grants (including IPG and research security) has been extended until September 30, 2024, to allow institutions to report on expenses incurred in fiscal year 2023-24, including those incurred under the 2023-24 grant between April 1 and June 30, 2024 (see Use of grant funds above). This extension applies to all components of the end-of-grant period requirement: the statement of account, the outcomes report, and reporting on institutional performance objectives, indicators and target outcomes on the institution’s website, as applicable.

What is the Research Support Fund?

The Research Support Fund assists Canadian postsecondary institutions with the costs associated with managing their research enterprise, helping them to maintain a world-class research environment. Grants can be used to:

  • maintain modern labs and equipment;
  • secure research from threats;
  • provide access to up-to-date knowledge resources;
  • provide research management and administrative support;
  • meet regulatory and ethical standards; or
  • transfer knowledge from academia to the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Over $450 million is invested each year through the Research Support Fund to support researchers, collaboration and breakthrough science. This includes the Incremental Project Grants and research security.
